One year later
In barrios throughout Buenos Aires last night, members of neighborhood assemblies celebrated the one year anniversary of Dec 19th, 2002, when thousands of citizens took to the streets to protest Fernando de La Rua's state of siege.
Assembly members banged pots, sang, chanted, lit street fires, handed out food and danced in the streets. Some were joined by individuals and families in the neighborhood who had not previously participated in the assemblies.
In Colegiales, the names of people killed last year were plastered on telephone polls with commemorative plants and flowers.
Some assembly members stayed in their neighborhood, while others marched on to the Plaza de Mayo. At the Plaza, some camped out in tents to spend the night in support of the arrival of the Piqueteros today.
"We're continuing to demonstrate against the repressive government, the IMF, and for a better world," said one asambleista.
Although many of the neighborhood assemblies have splintered into smaller groups, and some have dissolved, they are continuing to be active in Buenos Aires in the creation of collective soup kitchens and cultural centers, in occupying abandoned buildings and territory, in supporting and working with the piqueteros and cartoneros, and other activities.
