Bolivia on the brink of chaos
Por sebastian hacher/ pablo indio (((i))) - Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2003 at 8:01 AM

The situation in Bolivia seems at the verge of civil was, with police and military shooting at each other in the central Plaza of La Paz

Wednesday February 12, 2003 at 09:40 AM
Compañeros, Bolivia is about to explode

Everybody believed the big protests would take place tomorrow, but the tight situation, the silence of the government, the anger of the people and the stike of the police have accelarated everything.

The main Plaza of La Paz has been taken by the military and the military police, armed with wartype amunition and handgrenades. The police and the military are shooting at each other, up and till now reports are of one dead and at least two wounded.

The pictures look like war; automatic guns, sub machine guns, loads of amunition and movement of troops is what the scenery looks like.

Two hours ago a big demonstration of students and neighbours managed to enter the Plaza, armed with sticks, pickaxes and stones. This morning other protesters threw stones at the government palace where the president was with his ministers.

Brave protesters built up in front of the troops protesting with hand painted signs against the rise of taxes and telling the president to resign.

The police station of the GES (bolivian special forces police) is the epicentre of the strike and half a block away from the Plaza. From here dozens of tear gases were shot at the military and in one of the other corners of the Plaza a further police station is ready to attack.

"dont provoke us or youll die" the police are shouting, threatening to expand the conflict in any moment.

We have been told that in the roundabouts of the Plaza spontaneous protest marches are moving towards the Plaza in this very moment.

The situation is very tense. We are trying to give an account of what is happening taking a lot of care of us and we apreciate the preocupation and solidarity of our friends and companeros and we ask them to help in any posible form to make this information be known.

As soon as possible we will publish more information along with the fotos

reality check
Por kole - Thursday, Feb. 13, 2003 at 9:13 PM

Hey all,

the police were unarmed and in civies. It was Lozada's neoliberal army that was the only one's shooting. The death toll is now 27, with over 100 injured (according the the BBC's Spanish language service) and the toll is mounting. This violence has been going on since last month. The COB - main union - and the MAS (main opposition group led by a hero of mine, Evo Morales) are at the front of these protests. The government has snipers on rooftops at the moment. A 21 year old nurse was killed by one of these assholes. This is a neoliberal government that is out of control and has resorted to an outright rampage to get what it wants. Compare this to the situation in Venezuela, where a sustained attempt by the country's elites to topple the government has been met with ZERO BULLETS AND ZERO ARRESTS! Where is all the media that was calling Chavez a dictator now? Why so mum on Lozada's bloody reign? The Andes is in revolution tonight, all our heart's should be with our brothers and sisters in Bolivia. Let's make sure that people remember the 27 innocent victims of neoliberal terror in Bolivia when we hit the streets this Saturday. NUNCA MAS! PARA UNA AMERICA UNIDA SIN LOS CAPITALISTAS Y LOS YANQUIS!
