Against the eviction.
When Argentina exploded in a popular uprising on December 19 and 20th 2001,overthrowing four presidents in two weeks, the mainstream international press reported on the news as the ³collapse² of a country. Frustrated, I went to Indymedia Argentina and was instantly transported to the streets of Buenos Aires, where unemployed workers, middle class neighbours and university students were staging a revolt against the same neo-liberal economic program that is failing around the world. The protests did not represent the collapse of a country, but the end of passivity.
For tens of thousands of international visitors, Indymedia became our only window to this remarkable uprising, inviting us to not just to look but also participate by writing directly to those involved, and posting stories of resistance from around the world. A national movement went global.
Over the past year, I have seen Indymedia Argentina¹s reporters in action here in Buenos Aires. They are there, cameras in hand, at virtually every protest, road blockade, occupied factory, and important
assembly. Indymedia Argentina¹s importance to the social movements here cannot be overstated. The site is the primary space for non-partisan debate
about movement ideas and tactics. When a social movement is facing police repression or eviction something that is occurring with alarming frequency
at the moment -- Indymedia is usually the first to get the call. People here know that there is no better way to mobilize people quickly. This is not alternative media or marginal media it is genuine community media.
Now Indymedia Argentina is the one facing eviction, and it is Indymedia that needs us to mobilize for its protection. The local government here may well be counting on the fact that when the world is focused on a massive war, smaller local battles can seem unimportant. Now is the time to prove them wrong. Contra el desalojo
Cuando Argentina explotó en un levantamiento popular el 19 y 20 de Diciembre de 2001derrocando cuatro presidentes en dos semanas, los principales medios internacionales de prensa lo mostraban en las noticias como el “colapso” de un país. Frustrada, entré a Indymedia Argentina y fui transportada instantáneamente a las calles de Buenos Aires, donde desempleados, vecinos de clase media y estudiantes universitarios protagonizaban una revuelta en contra del mismo programa económico neoliberal que está fallando en todo el mundo .Las protestas no representaban el colapso de un país sino el fin de la pasividad.
Para decenas de miles de visitantes internacionales, Indimedia de convirtió en nuestra única ventana a este importante levantamiento, invitándonos no solo a mirar sino también a paraticipar escribiendo directamente a aquellos involucrados y publicando historias de resistencia desde todas partes del mundo. Un movimiento nacional se convirtió en global.
Durante el año pasado he visto a los periodistas de Indymedia en acción en Buenos Aires. Están allí, cámara en mano, en prácticamente cada manifestación, corte de ruta, fábrica ocupada e imporetante asamblea . La importancia de Indymedia Argentina pará los movimientos socials aquí no puede ser subestimada. El sitio es el espacio principal pará un debate no partisano acerca de las ideas del movimiento y susu tácticas. Cuando un movimiento social enfrenta la repression policial o el desalojo (algo que está ocurriendo con alarmante frecuencia en este momento) Indymedia es usualmente el primero que recibe la llamada. La gente aquí sabe que no hay mejor manera de movilizar persona s rápidamente. Este no es un medio alternativo o marginal. Es un genuino medio comunitario
Ahora Indymedia Argentina es quien enfrenta el desalojo y es Indymedia quien necesita que nos movilizemos para su protección. El gobierno local cuenta con el hecho de que mientras el mundo está enfocado en una Guerra masiva, las pequeñas batallas locales pueden parecer no importantes. Es el momento de probar que se equivocan.Por favor ayuden la campaña anti desalojo de Indymedia ahora.

REasons are both economic and political. Indymedia headquarters in Buenos Aires are located in a building that useed to be a bank and now is occupied by several grass roots organizations.

It was very nice of you to write that note.
But please, take note that there is a difference between being politically active by choice and that of necessity.
Perhaps you would like to see your fellow Canadians suffer so that will become more active politically. Maybe when your children are dying of hunger, your people will leave their lap tops and take to the streets. Perhaps Canada needs a good dictarship.
If you are into magic realism, perhaps you should try fiction.

We are all citizens of the same world. It does not matter that Canada does not have a militaristic dictatorship- we can still feel empathetic with Argentinia. Would you rather we NOT care for you because we do not live with you? We are with you all the way.

I'm confused. I am searching for the manner of action called for by this site in solidarity with IMC Argentina; I do not find any guidance or suggestions? I pledge my solidarity by my word in the solitude of my office, but what form of support is most needed from us?

Los sueños no se Desalojan, las esperanzas no se desalojan, el futuro no se desaloja, la lucha y la resistencia no se desalojan...
Aqui nos encontramos, en lo que fue el palacio de la usura y la ambicion, un banco abandonado a la suerte y a las ratas que hoy esta lleno de vida, de niños sonriendo ante las obras de titeres, de necesidades, de ansiedades, de voluntades unidas frente a la amenaza constante de este sistema que pretende avanzar sobre nuestras cabezas pisoteando nuestras dignidades.... Es alli donde nosotros y nosotras decimos NO PASARAN, decimos que queremos permanecer en este lugar y que el Citybank Terrorista no tiene ni el mas minimo derecho a tratarnos de usurpadores a quienes resignificamos algo que para ellos solo tenia valor de renta para darle hoy un valor social. Ese valor social que ellos se empeñan en destruir en cada especulacion, en cada coima que pagan, en cada desalojo que ordenan, en cada bomba que financian....
Aqui estamos, aqui estaremos, mal que les pese....
A la solidaridad internacional, la recibimos fraternalmente y como estas cosas no se agradecen, lo que si hacemos es tomar el compromiso de continuar la batalla desde este espacio recuperado, tratando de unir lo desunido, de organizar esta bronca de ver a los pibes del barrio desnutridos a minutos de la bolsa de valores, de afirmarnos en esta trinchera que compartimos los que no tenemos nada mas que nuestro caminar constante hacia eso que algunos llaman utopia, de seguir sumando a esta resistencia que se oponga al nuevo orden mundial empezando por cambiar este nuevo orden local que digitan los mandarines de turno...
Ni un paso atras...
