Piqueteros May Lose Their Monthly Support

translation of Indymedia article:

Thousands of piqueteros from diverse organizations marched in Buenos Aires on November 7 to demand a solution to the situation of 80,000 unemployed workers who are at risk of losing their 150 peso per month subsidies because of bureaucratic entanglements.

At 9:00AM, the columns of piqueteros began to arrive at Constitution train station, where a police operative checked each demonstrator who got onto the train, while the police dogs barked and the infantry mobilized with sticks and rifles.

Two busloads of demonstrators from MTD Solano were stopped at Pueyredon Bridge, their names were registered, they were insulted and harassed by police agents.

The mobilization then passed by Congreso and the Ministry of Labor. There, the piqueteros made their demands known to Minister Graciela Camaño, who said she would resolve the bureaucratic problems.

After the meeting the piqueteros marched to the Rectory of the University of Buenos Aires, which continues to be occupied by students of the Social Sciences Department. Then they marched to the Ministry of Social Action.

During the demonstrations, the media focused on "the traffic chaos." We choose instead to focus on the enormous power of the piquetero orgaizations who continue firm in their demands despite the state's effort to crush them.

Included in the demonstration were members of the Independent Movement of Retired People and Unemployed, the National Piqueteros Block (POLO Obrero, MTL, Movimiento Teresa Rodriguez, Corriente de Unidad Barrial, Frente de Trabajadores Combativos) Barrios de Pie, el Frente Barrial 19 de Deciembre, MTD Resister y Vencer, MTD of Anibal Veron, Unidad de Trabajadores en Lucha. Also present were assemblies, workers from Brukman, and students.

There were also large demonstrations in Rosario and Cordoba.
