Por translation: mark - Friday, Aug. 06, 2004 at 4:46 PM

Friday 6 of August 2004 Tabacal beats you, the Orán Police lock you up Yesterday the sugar company tried to dismantle the lands belonging to the El Algarrobal community. Private security guards hired by the San Martín del Tabacal sugar plant beat indigenous people with sticks and made death threats to one of their leaders. Minutes later, the Orán Police arrived and detained seven members of the community who were seriously injured.

According to a communiqué made by the El Tabacal Community which is also in conflict with the subsidiary business of the Seabord Corporation, “the police allowed the guards to act with impunity, viciously beating elders, women and children. The same guards, at the command of Marcelo Romero, trampled and burned the Argentine flag while shouting 'Bolivians without papers' ”.

Six of the detained were still in the nº 20 police station (comisaría) in Orán at midnight yesterday, while Benjamín Flores, 57-years-old, was taken to the Hospital San Vicente de Paul for his wounds according to the same communiqué.
